What we do

Centre of Design, Innovation and Translational Excellence (CITE), initially focused on maternal and neonatal health with a long-term aspiration to build innovation and capacity in the low resource settings, this will act as a blueprint to stimulate innovations beyond maternal and child health and to expand technological and research expertise to become the leading center for academic excellence and innovations in biomedical engineering in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Dr. Robert Ssekitoleko

He is the head of the Biomedical Engineering Unit at Makerere University in the College of Health Science

Prof. Noah Kiwanuka

He is a Professor of Infectious Diseases Epidemiology, and is the founder and Director of the Makerere University CTU.

Dr. Sam Ononge

He is a Clinical Epidemiologist and a consultant Gynecologist/Obstetrician. He is a Lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics

Brian Matovu

Brian is a biomedical engineering researcher and innovator working with Makerere University where he also assists in tutoring and lecturing students.

Prof. John Norrie

Prof. Norrie is a Professor of Medical Statistics and Trial Methodology and Director of the Edinburgh Clinical Trials Unit. John leads trial input from Edinburgh and partnership working with Prof. Noah Kiwanuka between Edinburgh and Makerere Clinical Trial Units.

Prof. Steff Lewis

Prof. Lewis is a medical statistician with over 25 years of experience, across a range of study types. Steff is co-developing a training package for clinical trials of medical devices with Sharon Tuck in Edinburgh and the team at Makerere University.

Sharon Tuck

Sharon is a clinical trial statistician with over 15 years of experience designing and developing clinical trials. She is coordinating development of the training package for clinical trials of medical devices with Steff Lewis and the team at Makerere University..

Capacity building for a Centre of Design, Innovation and Translational Excellence (CITE) for clinical trials of healthcare technologies in SS Africa”.

The main objective is to strengthen local research capacity through training on clinical trial design for investigational medical devices and medical writing for the regulation of such devices.
